Selfie Saturday #1

Selfie Saturday #1

Welcome to the first Selfie Saturday (this may get posted on a Sunday), which honestly I am a little ashamed of! I have found it oddly perplexing that my generation has become so intrigued by pictures of our own faces. At first I really thought the whole Selfie business to be rather conceited and self-gratifying, but I have come to realize that it can actually be a fantastic way to remember experiences from our day to day lives. I can look back at almost any picture of myself that I have taken and remember my thoughts and emotions at that exact moment.

But back to the real matter at hand! Selfie Saturday: my weekly opportunity to share with you something about me that is not related to my literary posts (by the way, I do find it ironic that my literature-based blog now has two posts completely irrelevant to literature). The first thing I believe you should know about me is that I have a bit of an old soul when it comes to my taste in music. I absolutely adore music hailing from the eighties, and I have to say, the seventies and nineties were both pretty damn good decades themselves for music. My favorite band of all time, however, is Fleetwood Mac. I am a GARGANTUAN Fleetwood Mac fan. Even my Jeep is named Stevie after Stevie Nicks. Recently I was able to see them in concert with my best friend, and it was arguably one of the most life-changing experiences I have ever had. For a solid three days I went through some pretty excruciating withdrawals from the concert. I think what attracts me to Fleetwood is both the mystical spirit that seems to consume each of their songs but also the cocaine-fueled dramatic stories that are behind them. Honestly, I occasionally crave confrontation, and many Fleetwood Mac songs (especially those from Rumours) tend to have an extensively decorated background. For those of you wondering, my favorite Fleetwood songs are most definitely Silver Springs, Sisters of the Moon, and Sara (yes in that order.) If you aren't too familiar with Fleetwood Mac or Stevie Nicks, I recommend that you do a quick Spotify search at this very moment. Your life will never be the same.

Until Wednesday,

Brock

Time cast a spell on you but you won't forget me
I know I could've loved you
But you would not let me
I'll follow you down 'til the sound of my voice
Will haunt you

Welcome

Welcome to "A Teenager's Look Through the Bell Jar"

Greetings! Welcome to my new blog. My name is Brock Colyar, and I am a teenager (as stated in my blog's title) looking to both gain experience in writing and share my opinions with others through this new forum.

My real passion in life is literature, so the majority of my posts will be comprised of my thoughts on classic novels, modern novels, nonfiction books, and poetry, speckled with a little social commentary and personal anecdote. I want to be able to discuss the basics of literature while also transcending its barriers to connect it to my life and the world around me. I want to share with all of you a "teenager's look through the bell jar." (As you may have noticed, I am a HUGE Sylvia Plath fan, henceforth the "bell jar.")

Most likely I will post my literature-based posts once a week, on Wednesdays, but for a couple of months I will also do a "Selfie Saturday" (here begins the high school, teenage nonsense) that will just give you a little insight into my personality and interests in life so that you can fully understand my voice as a writer.

Thank you so much for visiting my new blog! I hope that you will come back again and enjoy some of the things I have to say! If you have any suggestions, questions, or comments, feel free to either comment below, follow me on Instagram or Twitter, or send me an email.

Until next time, here is a quote by the lovely Sylvia Plath to get your mind thinking:

"I can never read all the books I want; I can never be all the people I want and live all the lives I want. I can never train myself in all the skills I want. And why do I want? I want to live and feel all the shades, tones and variations of mental and physical experience possible in life. And I am horribly limited."
